the 130th post on vday
the history of Valentine's Day
Every February, across the country, candy, flowers, and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine.
One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men -- his crop of potential soldiers. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine's actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death. Other stories suggest that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons where they were often beaten and tortured.
According to one legend, Valentine actually sent the first 'valentine' greeting himself. While in prison, it is believed that Valentine fell in love with a young girl -- who may have been his jailor's daughter -- who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter, which he signed 'From your Valentine,' an expression that is still in use today. Although the truth behind the Valentine legends is murky, the stories certainly emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic, and, most importantly, romantic figure. It's no surprise that by the Middle Ages, Valentine was one of the most popular saints in England and France.
how did alene spend her vday
- exams in the morning. stoned midway during the paper. what has been studied came out but cannot recall what is being studied. so crapped & nonsense-ed on the paper.
- dined at Seoul Garden with azkiah & friend at Causeway Point. window shopped.
- supposed to be going out somewhere else with some others but cancelled.
- HOMEHOME. (:
i see almost every girl/lady holding a bouquet/stalk of roses holding a guy's hand wherever i go. be it along the street, on the bus, in the train; be the rose colour red orange pink, its everywhere. (: how sweet to have someone giving you roses, especially on a special day like Vday. Vday used to a day i spend with close friends & bf(s), but im single this time! but close friends drifted away from me.. :/ looking at the collection of neoprints & photos i pasted on the walls of my room, realised that time really past so fast..
dinner was really healthy today. there was: stir fried 'xiao bai cai', stir fried celery with fishcakes, fried egg with veg & fish soup. what a meal eaten on vday eh. thankfully there was Seoul Garden buffet earlier. :D:D:D
im contemplating whether should i go for training tomorrow. there's so much to do & clear at home. cny is really a headache & total extreme chore. worse still, the decorations on my house door went missing. PEOPLE STEAL SUCH STUFFS TOO, I DINT KNOW THAT.
